Short-Term Rentals

The Township of Tiny’s Short-Term Rental By-law allows up to 300 short-term rental licences to be issued annually. Only approved licences can initiate the renewal application process. All licences expire annually on December 31, and need to be renewed and approved to operate the following calendar year.

The 2025 licence fee of $1750 helps with cost recovery of the staff time spent on inspections, administration, and enforcement for the licensing program.

If you are interested in renting your property and have never had a licence before, you should visit www.tiny.ca/STR to understand what is required and how to start the process. It is against the law to operate a short-term rental prior to obtaining a licence from the municipality.

If you have concerns about a Short-Term Rental, you can file a complaint through the Host Complaint Tips Portal or by calling Host Compliance. For more details on the program and how to file a Short-Term Rental complaint, please visit: www.tiny.ca/STR.

Fire Permits

All property owners in the township are required to obtain a fire permit before having any outdoor fires. The cost is $30.00 per calendar year, plus a 5 per cent processing fee for online transactions (from the township’s payment service provider). A fire permit may be purchased online with a credit card at: www.tiny.ca/firepermit. The fine for failing to obtain a fire permit is $365.00, or a Summons to appear in court.

The burning of leaves is strictly prohibited. Pine Needles are the ‘leaves’ of coniferous trees and are therefore prohibited as well.

Fire Permits can be purchased locally at T’s Variety store in Lafontaine with cash and interac only.

Permit Parking

Just a reminder that permit parking comes into effect from April 15th and runs until October 15th. This means you must have a permit displayed whenever parked on a municipal roadway or paid parking area. Yes, even in front of your home.

One free resident parking permit is available to taxpayers (permanent and seasonal) of the Township of Tiny. A second permit costs $30.00. Each property can obtain a maximum of two resident parking permits.

When a resident is purchasing the parking permit, your license plate number is not required, but a copy of your Township of Tiny tax bill or photo I.D. is required to show proof of property ownership.

Once you complete an online application, you will be emailed a temporary permit, which will expire 14 days from the date of purchase. A permanent permit will be mailed to you to replace the temporary permit.

Fireworks

In the Township of Tiny, Fireworks can only be set off on the following dates:

  • Victoria Day
  • Canada Day
  • New Year’s Eve
  • New Years Day

The discharge of fireworks is strictly prohibited within the municipality outside of these four days.

In the event of inclement weather on Victoria Day or Canada Day, that make it impractical to set off fireworks, the next day following Victoria Day or Canada shall be designated the day. Inclement weather such as rain or wind velocity is report to be greater than twenty (20) kilometres per hour.

Off Road Vehicles (ORV) & All Terrain Vehicles (ATV)

ORV’s & ATV’s can only be driven on specific municipally assumed roadways as per Bylaw 21-103 and designated Simcoe County Forest trails that allow for the use of ORV and ATV’s – operators will need to have a valid permit for this trail system. To find out which Simcoe County Forests allow ORV/ATV’s please contact Simcoe County at 705-726-9300 or visit their website by clicking on the following link Recreational Use of the Simcoe County Forests and review the Motorized Trail riding section.

You are also able to operate an ATV on private property with the permission of the property owner.

Noise By-Law

The Township of Tiny Noise By-law is available on our website for review. It is recommended that property owners renting their property may wish to post a copy of the Township Noise By-law or provide each renter with a copy when explaining the property rules. In the past, this has been extremely effective in ensuring voluntary compliance. A few by-law highlights include:

  • The Noise By-law is in effect 24 hours a day;
  • Loud music, yelling and shouting is prohibited;
  • Fines range from $180.00 to $100,000.00 OR SUMMONS to appear in Court;
  • Both the renter and property owner will be charged for any violations.

Lafontaine Community Fire Services

It is important that you are aware that the Township does not have an abundance of fire hydrants which could effet your home insurance coverage. Insurance providers often have questions about distances to hydrants and fire stations from your home/cottage.

The municipal fire station in our community is Station #1 – Lafontaine, 384 rue Lafontaine Road West in Lafontaine Village.

The Township of Tiny Fire & Emergency Service has a Tanker Shuttle Accreditation, which can be submitted to your insurance company. This document could mean a discount to you for your home insurance.

Winter Road Closures

The hills located on Concession 15 West, and Concession 17 West, will be closed for the winter months, as there is no winter maintenance on these sections of road. The closures will commence early November and remain in effect until April.

Annual Flushing of Water Lines

Flushing is an important part of water main maintenance. Over time, minerals dissolved in water will settle in the water mains. Flushing uses a high flow of water to clean out the mains and remove sediment. It has the added benefit of introducing fresh water into all parts of the distribution system.

Water systems in the Township of Tiny are flushed annually. The red notice board is used to inform residents when their system is going to be flushed and the flushing schedule is available on the Township website.

Watering

Watering restrictions apply to lawns, flower and vegetable gardens, plants and shrubs.

One vehicle may be washed every calendar day, anytime per residence.

For pools and hot tubs, top up only. Absolutely no filling allowed anytime

Even numbered addresses can water on even-numbered calendar days from 5 a.m. – 8 a.m. or 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Odd-numbered addresses can water on odd-numbered calendar days from 5 a.m. – 8 a.m. or 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Lawn Watering Permit

If you are seeding or laying down sod, a permit is available to extend watering times. Under the permit, you may water from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. every day for 14 days. Permits for Flat Rate Properties are $75.00 and Metered Properties are $50.00 each and are available at the Township Office.

Commercial Application of Fertilizer in the Lafontaine / Georgian Sands Area

A map of the Lafontaine water system indicates water sampling and levels of nitrate in specific areas. Those measuring less than 10 require a Risk Management Plan (RMP) while those measuring over 10 are prohibited from application of fertilizer.

506 parcels of land in Tiny are impacted by the Source Protection Policies (SPP). In Tiny there are 62 RMP’s outstanding and 1 agreed to.

It was determined that there are 226 residential properties in the prohibition area and a ban on commercial fertilizers has been imposed in those areas. Homes on Desroches Trail, Macedonia Circle, Tall Pines, Forest Circle and Wolf Trail are affected.

Gypsy Moths (now spongy moths)

From the Summer of 2019 until Summer 2021, the Lafontaine area of Tiny experienced a horrific attack of gypsy moth (Now spongy moth) caterpillars which was only exacerbated by the Covid 19 pandemic. The time, effort and cost expended by community members over this period paid off with very few egg masses spotted in Spring 2021. It seems they have traveled south to Barrie, Toronto & Mississauga who are dealing with the infestation including aerial spraying. This is a cyclical issue and LASHA continues to push Council to incorporate a Spongy Moth Management Policy and has provided them with a draft of such a policy. By doing so the chaos experienced over the past three years will not be repeated. A small annual investment in a Forestry Health Reserve will provide a basic fund to be drawn upon should another infestation occur in the not-so-distant future. So far, the current Council is against this and is content to let future Councils deal with the issue when it arises.
