Happy Canada Day and welcome to the June and last edition of LASHA Currents.

LASHA Currents June 2025
Final Edition
Some Good News
The LASHA Board was extremely happy to hear that our delegation to council on Communuty Safety Zones leading to Automated Speed Control (ASE) did not fall on deaf ears, even if it took two years to respond. At the June 24th Committee of the Whole, council supported a new Community Safety Zone policy and direction to evaluate an ASE program with the Town of Newmarket. This is just one more step in improving our community safety.
A Message From The President
The Future of LASHA
Now heading into the tenth year of LASHA, I have decided to move on as its full time President at the end of this year. Cathy and I built our home here, moved up in 2011 and have had absolutely no regrets ever since. Lots were selling for between $35 – $40 K. and you could build a raised bungalow for around $300 K. Taxes were low and there was a great sense of community.
In 2015, after having followed local council meetings and facing a newly elected council, I realized that our area was one of the few without a homeowner’s association and given my experience as an association executive, decided to form LASHA. Although slow at the start, it soon gained momentum and the rest is history.
However, a lot has changed over the years and LASHA now has to take on a new focus moving forward. The association will continue, but with a different management set-up and vision based on our Boards review of member feedback and environmental changes since the organization was first established.
What LASHA Has Accomplished
The following are just some examples of what we have accomplished over the past almost ten years. Things that would not have been addressed without a strong voice.
Association Activities
- Through the Townships commemorative program, installed LASHA benches at 5 beach front locations.
- chaired the LA Beach Park master plan committee with the successful installation of a bocce court, pavilion, accessible playground and finally permanent washrooms in 2024. This took some six years to accomplish.
- carried out annual LA beach cleanups and removed of over 100 bags of spotted knapweed over the years.
- installed a large welcome sign at the top of the hill on the 16^th Concession promoting our beautiful beaches and a 40 KMH limit. This was our major project for 2024.
- provided exclusive distribution of the monthly LASHA Currents newsletter, our prime communications medium and periodic LASHA Ripples to address key issues.
- through membership in FoTTSA provide access to the retail discounts program; water testing programs and shoreline advocacy.
- instituted the https://mylasha.com/ website which now boasts a directory exclusively for our business members and many new features.
Council Activities
- Reviewed and provided input to Council on all Township Budget documents and attended or viewed the special council budget review meetings since 2016.
- Coordinated two meet the candidate sessions for the 2022 municipal elections.
- lobbied council about poor road conditions resulting in a significant portion of our community roads now being addressed.
- approached Council in June 2023 to address the speeding issue by instituting a 40 KPH limit on TBRN and marking of the bike lanes and installing no parking signs on TBRN between the 15^th and 16^th Concessions. Also, lobbied for community safety zones and Automates Speed Enforcement which is now on the horizon.
- continued working with the Tiny Township Residents Alliances (TTRA) efforts to have council re-think its approach to the administrative building through the “Stop the Build” campaign.
- through our membership in the Federation of Tiny Township Shoreline Associations (FoTTSA), provided full reports on all council meetings via the Tiny Cottager annual print newsletter and monthly Flash e-newsletter.
- requested improvements to the beach access at the 15^th Concession with permanent improvements scheduled in 2025.
- What Has Changed Since 2015?
- The Midland Mirror newspaper has been replaced by the on-line Midland Today which covers local council meetings.
- LASHA joined the Federation of Tiny Township Shoreline Associations (FoTTSA) which is now carrying the reports on council and addressing many of the shoreline advocacy issues.
- There are now several Facebook neighborhood pages.
- Council meetings are live streamed on Youtube.
- The Tiny Township Residents Alliance (TTRA) was formed to address all Township advocacy issues.
New and Improved LASHA Website Coming Soon
Much of our feedback is that there is information overload making our LASHA Currents somewhat redundant. To address this, we will no longer be issuing a monthly newsletter, rather focusing our efforts on a newly designed website that will be a one stop resource for everything community. Members will be able to access information on anything they could possibly need with links to all key local services.
For example, free/sale items; lost pets; septic system maintenance; photo gallery; business directory; local construction and maintenance activities; beach locations and water conditions; association meetings; beach cleanups; potlucks, fireworks, Canada Day celebrations; neighbourhood watch; Simcoe interactive assessment and Tiny zoning Maps etc.
It will also contain a members only area with a Member Dashboard; Member Directory (Opt-in for neighborhood watch); Community Forum; Meeting Minutes & Docs; Volunteer Opportunities; Dues payment etc.
Governance Action Needed – We Need Your Help
Advocacy was a big part of my role in LASHA which will now be handled through our alliances with FoTTSA and the TTRA. These groups will keep you up to date on all things council and how they will impact you directly. We will also put more of a focus on social and educational events, aiming to promote community by bringing members together.
However, to address this need we will require volunteers to assist us in various areas.
Most of our Board have served for several years and we will need members to step up and volunteer. The current Board is staying on until the end of this year but will need at least five new Board members, preferably more, to come on as of September when we hold our Annual General Meeting. There are no special skills required but past committee experience would be a definite asset.
The primary open positions will be:
* Chair
* Secretary
* Treasurer
* Director – Events
* Director – Communications
Time commitments will vary, but quarterly two hour meetings will most likely be the format moving forward.
Members interested in serving are invited to our July 22nd
Board meeting to get a better understanding of how the Board and association will function. So, email us at (mailto:) to let us know of your interest and whether you can make the meeting or not. Attendance is not a pre-requisite, and other arrangements can be made.
Should we get no interest, we will have no alternative but to wind up operations which would leave the voices of a large community not represented. This would be unfortunate given the successes LASHA has achieved over the past ten years including, most recently, having council move forward with community safety zones and automated speed enforcement.
As mentioned, it is not a huge time commitment and the continuation of our mission is extremely important.
It has been a pleasure watching this community grow over the past 14 years and extremely satisfying seeing the results LASHA has achieved. I am not going anywhere and will continue to be a supporter of LASHA as long as it is in existence.
